What to expect?

Patient's history and symptoms before osteopathic examination

As part of the first osteopath appointment, the patient will be asked questions to help better understand information about their symptoms and condition. Examples of questions you may be asked by your doctor are:

When and how did the pain start?
Where is it localized?
Is it the result of an injury?
What movements or circumstances make your condition better?
What movements or circumstances make it worse?

The patient is also usually asked to provide information about medical history, any pre-existing medical diagnoses or previous injuries, and previous and current locations and treatments.

Osteopathic, chiropractic examination

A thorough osteopathic examination includes general movement tests as well as specific and palpatory tests, as well as, as needed, orthopedic and neurologic tests to evaluate:

Range of motion of the affected body part.
Muscle tone.
Muscle strength.
Neurologic integrity.
Identification of movements causing pain.

The diagnosed condition, its nature.
The individualized osteopathic treatment plan.
The approximate duration of treatment.
